Guilty Pleasures: Postres Griegos

He dejado de escribir por un tiempo torque he estado demasiado canasta.  Mi bebé está pasando por una etapa en la que se despierta cada 3 horas de nuevo, así que ha sido difícil enfocarme en algo más que en dormir.  Ya ha mejorado (todavía se despierta cada 3 hrs) pero tengo a alguien que me ayuda un par de noches a la semana.

En fin, he estado esperando poder escribir acerca de este lugar que realmente me encanta, el ambiente es lo máximo, pero la comida, uffff, la comida es genial, especialmente los postres.  Se llama Athanasiou, es una franquicia de una panadería donde puedes comer, tomarte una copa de café, un gelato, comprar chocolates, pan, comida congelada, y algunas especialidades que tiene la marca.  Ahorita que he estado de maternidad, lo he estado visitando bastante, aunque realmente no puedo comer muchas cosas por mi dieta libre de lácteos.  Como siempre, peco de vez en cuando, así que fui con mi esposo y mi bebé a almorzar un sábado y tomé un par de fotos para que puedan ver el lugar, no es lo máximo? Es como estar en un mercado de película.  Qué es obligatorio probar? El baklava!!! Definitivamente!! Yo siempre me compro al menos dos, veanlos en las fotos, les va a provocar comerse toda la mesa.  Otra cosa son los chocolates, realmente se puede probar un poco de todo, ya que todo lo que he probado ha sido buenísimo, el quiche, el pie de limón, el pan, la pizza, etc.  Sin excepciones hasta ahora.

No es barato, pero no es taaaan caro tampoco, digamos que vale la pena.

I’ve been away for a while because I’ve been too tired. My baby just had a sleep regression, he’s waking up every three hours again, so it was hard to focus on the blog, since all I want to do is to get some sleep. It’s getting better (he’s still waking up every three hours) but I have someone that’s helping me a couple of nights a week.
Anyway, I’ve been wanting to share a piece on a place I absolutely love in Panama, the enviroment is amazing, but the food, ufff, the food is great, specially the desserts. It’s called Athanasiou, it’s a greek pastry franchise where you can eat, have a nice cup of cofee, a gelato, buy chocolates, bread, frozen food, and some other special products of the brand. Now that I’m in my maternity leave, I’ve been visiting a little too much, although I cannot eat most of the food due to my dairy free diet. As always, I indulge myself with a little sin once in a while, so we went there with my husband and my baby boy to have lunch on a Saturday and I took a couple of pictures for you to see the place, isn’t it great? It’s like being in a marketplace.
What I think you have to try? The baklava!!! Definitely, I always eat at least two, just look at them, don’t you want to eat the whole table? You should also try the chocolates, I would totally recommend you to try a little bit of everything, since so far, I’ve tried a lot of things like the quiche, lemon pie, pizza, bread, and everything has been delicious! No exceptions.
It is not cheap, but it isn’t that expensive either, let’s just say it’s worth it. Take a look at the pictures and enjoy!

Un lugar extraño pero delicioso

Imagina que es tu primera semana en Panamá, vas manejando tu carro por una calle llamada Calle 50, y de repente ves una larga fila de carros esperando en un auto servicio, y piensas qué venderán allí o mejor dicho, qué están regalando para hacer esa cola.  Cuando ves el lugar, te parece extraño, es un kiosco llamado «La Casa de las Frutas Jugos y Helados», y no se ve como algo muy popular.  La próxima vez que vas manejando por la misma calle, ves la misma cola o una un poco más larga, y allí decides que tienes que probarlo también.  Y lo haces.

Primero que nada, solo para aclarar expectativas, los jugos son ricos, pero no son extraordinarios.  Creo que la principal razón por la que son populares es que Panamá es un país caliente, y a todos se nos antoja algo fresco y delicioso cuando vamos en el carro, además que sea conveniente y barato, allí es cuando decides ser parte de la cola! La verdad aunque se ve como que hay bastante cola, no tienes que esperar mucho, el servicio es súper eficiente, y te dicen varias veces antes de llegar al kiosco que tengas tu dinero listo (sí, es solo efectivo, pero es barato), luego pagas y recibes tu jugo… rápido! La fila más larga que he hecho ha sido de 5-8 minutos máximo, y estoy exagerando.  Lo que me encanta del lugar es que es toda una experiencia, y es algo rico y saludable también (claro, si no pides uno de los que tiene helado…).  Seguramente después de la primera vez, vas a volver a ir, se vuelve parte de tu vida y tu rutina en Panamá sin darte cuenta.

Imagine your first weeks in Panama, you are in your car driving through a street (Calle 50), and suddenly you spot a long line of cars in a drive through, you think «Wow what do they have over there that makes people do that line for?». You will be shocked, shocked, when you see the place, since it’s a small kiosk called «La Casa de las Frutas Jugos y Helados» (The house of fruits, juices and ice creams), and it doesn’t look as something as popular as it is. But the next time you drive through that same street, you see the same line or a longer one, that’s when you decide, you will try the famouse juices the next time you drive through there, and you do.
First of all, they are good, but not extraordinary, just to have your expectations clear. I think that what makes everyone do the line is that we live in a really hot country, and crave for something fresh and of course, delicious, that’s when you go and visit this place. The line becomes shorter once you are there, since the service is probably the most efficient in Panama, you have several signs telling you to have the cash ready (yes, cash only and it’s cheap too), pay and receive your treat super fast. Longest line I’ve done lasted probably 5-8 mins tops. You need to go there, it’s a totally crazy experience, but a delicious and healthy one as well (if you don’t order a shake with ice cream). You will go once, and for sure you’ll go again, it becomes a part of your life in Panama, you’ll see.

Baby Favorites: Bodies y pijamas

Hay muchas marcas que venden ropa de bebe, realmente debe ser un negocio super rentable, porque los bebes crecen tan rápido. Pero aun con la disponibilidad, me cuesta encontrar a veces cosas cómodas para vestirlo, creo que es porque la mayoría de marcas se enfocan en que los bebes se vean lindos, pero no en suavidad y duración. Mi bebe probablemente tiene mas ropa que yo, pero la mayoria de ropa no dura, algunas no le quedan después de la segunda lavada, otras tienen las tallas rarísimas (dice hasta 3 meses pero realmente es para un bebe de 1 semana), la misma talla en diferente marca varia demasiado, y por ultimo, a nadie le importa la duración de la suavidad.
Yo generalmente lo visto con toooodo lo que tiene, y siempre se ve bien, pero eso no significa que me encante la marca, especialmente cuando son pijamas y bodies (para t shirts, shorts, jeans y eso, busco cosas que se vean bien y ya).
Despues de probar varias marcas, he descubierto un par que me gustan, dentro de las que esta Mothercare, la cual tiene un bjen precio, y la ropa es de buena calidad. Hay dos tiendas en Panama (Albrook y Metromall) y dentro de poco va a abrir en Multiplaza. Se puede comprar de todo alli, no solamente ropa, sino desde carruajes (coches), sillas de comer, tinas, cunas, sacaleches, juguetes y muchas cosas mas.
Venden varias marcas y la de ellos, pero su enfoque en ropa es la marca Mothercare. Yo compre la tina, una sillita para dentro de la tina (la cual hablamos con mi esposo que seria genial en version de adulto).

También he comprado ítems para dar de comer a mi bebe, pero mis favoritos son los bodies y las pijamas! Me encantaaaaan por varias razones (esta es mi experiencia, cada bebe es diferente):
1. Las tallas son reales: Cuando una etiqueta de Mothercare dice Recién Nacido de X a Y peso, le queda a mi bebe hasta el peso Y o mas, nunca menos. La ropa dura lo que debería de durar. He usado tantas marcas que dicen hasta 5 kg pero a los 4kg o 4.5kg ya no le quedan! Me encanta una marca que sea mas precisa, y la encontré!
2. La suavidad dura: Es un hecho, la suavidad de la tela de la ropa de Mothercare dura. No se si soy to, pero siento que suavidad no es la prioridad de algunas marcas, y se pierde despues de un par de usos (o cuando se lava). Me encanta vestir a mi bebe con ropa que es tan suave como cuando la compre.
3. No se encoge: La ropa de Mothercare no se encoge (y si lo hace es muy poco). Mi bebe esta creciendo súper rápido, y todo le queda por muy poco tiempo. He usado varias cosas que mi bebe ha podido utilizar solo 1 o 2 veces porque después de una lavada se vuelven miniatura!

Ahora que se de esta marca (la cual me gustaría haber conocido antes) lo comparto aqui. Si las pruebas, espero que te gusten.

There are plenty of brands that sell baby’s clothes, it’s probably a really profitable business, since babies grow so fast. But even with the availability, I sometimes find myself with nothing confortable to put him on, because most of the brands focus in making babies look cute, but not in softness or lastigness. My baby probably owns more clothes than I do, but I’ve discovered that most of them won’t last, some won’t even fit after washing them twice, the sizes are all messed up (two shirts of the same size will fit differently), and it seems like they don’t care about the softness. I dress my baby with every garnment he owns, and he’s always looking cute, but it doesn’t mean that what I’m happy with the brand, specially when it comes to pjs and bodies, (for shirts, shorts and everything else I generally dress him on what looks cute).
After trying several brands, I’ve discovered a couple I love, one of them, with a good pricepoint, is called Mothercare. There are two stores in Panama (Albrook and Metromall) and will soon open in Multiplaza. You can buy everythig for your baby, from strollers, to high chairs, tubs, cribs, milk pumpers, toys, clothing of course, and many more. They sell several brands, as well as their own, but they focus on the Mothercare brand when it comes to clothes. I’ve bought the bath tub for my baby and a «chair» for him to sit in the tub, that my husband is jealous of, he wants one for him too.

I’ve also bought motherhood and nursing items, but my favorites are the pjs and bodies! I love them for many reasons (this is my experience, each baby is different, so somethings may be different for you too):
1. Sizes are real: When a Mothercare label reads NB from A to B weight, expect for it to fit until baby’s weight is in B, clothes will last until they say they will last. I’ve used so many brands that, as an exampl, read up to 5 kg, but in the end they stop fitting at 4.5kg. I love a brand that is a little more precise in that matter, and I’ve finally found one.

2. Softness lasts: A fact, the softness of the fabric in Mothercare clothes lasts. I don’t know if its only me, but I feel like softness is not a priority to some brands, since it’s lost after a few uses (or after you wash them). I love dressing my baby with something that is as soft as it was when you bought it.

3. They won’t shrink: Mothercare clothes won’t shrink (if they do they do just a little), my baby is growing super fast, and this are the only items that keep fitting. I’ve used a lot of brands and after my baby has worn them two or three times they won’t fit at all, they look as a NB size, except they are not. Now I know where to buy them.

Now that I’ve found something I love, I share it here, I’ve loved this brand so much, I wish I’ve knew about it sooner. So if you go to Metromall and Albrook, go visit it and tell me what you think of it, buy some PJs and try them on your baby (designs are super cute too).

Guilty pleasures: Una Cupcake Boutique

Quien no ama los cupcakes? El ultimo viernes me toco comer en un lugar que me encanta en Panama. Me vi forzada porque estaba con mi bebe en la tienda de al lado cuando empezó a llover hasta convertirse en una mega tormenta.
Nunca le digo que no a un cupcake (nunca!), pero estoy a dieta de lácteos porque mi leche le hace mal a mi bebé, asi que no debia comer alli y menos comerme un cupcake de postre. Pero rompí la dieta, claramente.
Creo que la mayoria de mujeres en Panama han visitado esta tienda, es un cupcake boutique, y los cupcakes son BUENISIMOS! Se llama Vanille, y si alguna vez estan visitando Panama, es demasiado buen plan ir y probar los cupcakes , no se van a arrepentir (aunque la dieta probablemente si).
Almorcé un sandwich de roast beef con cebollas caramelizadas, el cual me parece un poco caro, porque aunque es rico, hay mejores en otro lado. Cuando estaba allí, no podía concentrarme en lo salado, solo podia pensar en que postre iba a comer… Yuuummmm! Pedí un cupcake de zanahoria (mi favorito), pero hay muchísimos sabores para escoger (los he probado casi todos) y en mi opinion todos son buenísimos. He ido a Vanille a desayunar tambien y la comida es deliciosaaaa, totalmente recomendable! Si vas a este lugar, asegurate de ordenar el jugo de abacachi (piña), es uno de los antojos que me dan de ese lugar… En el website esta todo el menu que tienen disponible.
Otra cosa que me encanta es el ambiente del lugar, parece una casa de muñecas, es lo máximo para ir con amigas a platicar. Debajo unas fotos… da ganas de estar alli tomando una taza de café con un cupcake verdad?

Who doesn’t love cupcakes? Last Friday I was forced to have lunch in a place I really like in Panama. Why forced? Because me and my baby were at the store right next to it when it started to rain, we were trapped in the middle of a storm. I never say no to a cupcake (never!) but I’m on a strict diet by my baby’s gastroenterologist, so I wasn’t supposed to eat there or at least not have a cupcake for dessert. Guilty as charged, I did, I couldn’t resist.
I think most women in Panama have been there, it’s a cupcake boutique, and the cupcakes are AMAZING! It’s called Vanille, and if you are visiting Panama you should go and try the cupcakes, trust me, you won’t regret it (although your diet probably will). I had lunch, a roast beef sandwich with caramelized onions, which is a little too overprized since it’s tasty, but you could find same or better sandwiches somewere else. Still, I was there and couldn’t stop thinking of the dessert I was about to have… yummmm! I ordered a carrot cupcake (my favorite), but there are so many flavors to choose from (I’ve tasted most of them) and in my opinion, all if them are delicious. I’ve been in Vanille for breakfast too, and totally recommend it, food is great, and I love to start my day eating in a place like that, it’s a must to visit it for breakfast if you ask me. If you do so make sure to order abacachi juice, it’s one of the cravings I get from that place, visit their website and you can see the menu.
Another thing I love about the boutique is the look & feel, you feel like in a dreamy dollhouse, great location to hangout with your girl friends. Take a look at some pictures I took, don’t you wish you were there having a cup of tea and a cupcake rigt now?

Book Club: The Breathing Series

Una de mis actividades favoritas es leer, especialmente mientras le doy de comer a mi gordito. Me gusta la literatura, pero también me gustan los libros de «young adults», que son románticos, cursis y eso… Que puedo decir? Twilight cambio mi vida y arruino mi gusto literario. Ese es el tipo de libro que me mantiene despierta mientras le doy de comer a mi bebe, aunque desde el minuto 1 que empiezo a leer se en que va a terminar (si, son demasiado predecibles).
Hace algunos meses, estaba buscando en Internet algo para leer y encontré un libro llamado «Reason to breath» por Rebecca Donovan, con buenos reviews, así que lo compre. Fue el fin de dormir para mi, no podía dejar de leer! Cuando termine de leerlo me di cuenta que había un segundo libro, y un tercero que no había salido aun.

Este libro es mas profundo que otras novelas similares, es la historia de una joven que es víctima de violencia domestica, pero se enamora de uno de estos personajes que quisiéramos que existieran en la vida real.
Aun así la historia es acerca de la fragilidad, pero al mismo tiempo la fuerza de una persona que enfrenta una situación espantosa en su casa, y como logra afrontarlo por tener ese balance en su vida: el amor. La verdad es una historia de Cenicienta, pero con la dureza de la vida real. Y aunque probablemente los jovenes que sufren una situacion similar no logran siempre afrontarla con tanta facilidad, es ficcion, y muestra que siempre hay una salida. Me hizo pensar mucho que realmente no sabemos quien alrededor nuestro puede estar viviendo algo similar, y quisiera poder ayudar de alguna forma.
Mi consejo, lean el libro, en especial si les gustan las novelas de este tipo, al menos es mucho mas profundo que los vampiros y los hombres lobo.

One of my favorite activities is reading, and I’ve been doing it a lot lately, specially when I’m feeding my baby. I love good literature, but I also love young adults’ romantic stories, what can I say? Twilight totally ruined me and my literary taste. That’s the type of book that keeps me awake while breastfeeding, even tough I know the end from the minute I start reading (yes, I know the books are predictable).
A few months ago, I was trying to find something to read, and I came across this book called «Reason to breath» by Rebecca Donovan, it had good reviews, so I bought it. It was the end of sleeping for me, I just couldn’t put it down! When I finished reading it, I realized there was a second book (silly me didn’t get it when I read in the title Breathing #1), and a third, which wasn’t out when I finished the second, and for me it was a really long wait for it to be realesed, but I read them all and loved them.

The book is deeper than the other young adult novels, since it’s the story of a girl that is a victim of domestic violence, but she does fall in love, and there is a too good to be true guy involved. Still, the story is about the fragility and at the same time strenght of a girl while facing such a terrible situation at home, and how she manages to get strength to surpass it in falling for an amazing guy. Actually, it’s kind of a Cinderella story, but with the harshness of reality. Although in the real world I don’t think that most teens with this type of abuse can get out of it as easily, it’s fiction, and it shows that there is a way out. Book gets you thinking about people or friends that could be suffering any similar condition, and how you could help them.
My advice, read it, its a must if you like love stories, and it goes into a subject way deeper than vampires and werewolves.

Viviendo en un país donde el verano es eterno!

Soy guatemalteca, me mudé a Panama por trabajo, y he estado aquí por 5 años. Conoci a mi esposo 2 años despues de mudarme, y nos casamos un año despues, la misma fecha que nos conocimos. He experimentado Panama soltera y me la pase increíble, he experimentado como esposa, juntos los dos y nos encanto, y ahora voy a vivir Panama como mama.
Honestamente, me la he pasado demasiado bien aquí, donde siempre es verano (hasta en la epoca lluviosa, siempre esta caliente, y se puede ir a la playa en cualquier momento), pero sobre todo, he conocido tanta gente maravillosa y he hecho amigos de tantos países y culturas, amigos que voy a querer por siempre! Eso es lo que me gusta mas de Panama, pero al mismo tiempo me gusta menos: la experiencia multicultural. Cuando en tu día a día conoces gente de tantos países, especialmente de Latinoamérica, es impresionante, se aprende demasiado, pero, lamentablemente todos estan aquí temporalmente, y justo cuando se convierten en parte de tu familia, se van. Me han roto el corazón varias veces, ver a mis mejores amigas irse… Es tan difícil! Y mas si sabes que va a seguir pasando, que solo algunos van a vivir aquí por mucho tiempo. De igual forma, le agradezco a Panama por habernos recibido a todos, hoy tengo mi familia y amigos por esa mezcla de culturas que ha acogido este país (mi esposo es venezolano y yo guatemalteca, nuestro hijo: panameño!).
Me gusta vivir aquí, siempre hay algo nuevo para ver o para visitar. Voy a intentar escribir de mis lugares favoritos en Panama, asi como mis descubrimientos… Para que puedan verlo tambien.

I’m a guatemalan expat living in Panama, and I’ve been here for 5 years. I met my husband two years after I moved, and we got married one year after that, on the exact same date. I’ve experienced Panama as a single women and it was amazing, as a wife and I loved it, and now I’m about to do it as a mom.
I’ve had so much fun here, where it’s always summer (even during rain season, it’s always hot, and you could hit the beach all the time), but most of all, I’ve met so many great people and made friends of so many different countries and cultures, friends that I will forever love. That’s what I like the most about Panama, and at the same time it’s what I like the least: the multicultural experience! When you live here you are touched every day by people from many countries, specially from Latin America. But the thing is, most of them are living here temporarily, therefore even if they get attached, they will leave. I’ve had my heart broken several times, having to watch some of my best friends leave… and it’s hard to know it’s gonna keep happening, there are only a few that will live here for a long time. Still, I thank Panama for it’s hospitality with me and my family, we are together today because of that mix of cultures they welcome into their country, since I’m from Guatemala and my husband is venezuelan.
I like living here, there’s always something new to see and some place new to visit! That’s why I’m gonna try to write about my favorite places in Panama, as well as on my new discoveries… So that you can live it too.

Este es mi primer post, espero que sea el primero de muchos. Antes tenia un blog donde escribia princialmente de moda, pero luego quede embarazada y todo cambio. Durante mi primer trimestre tuve «morning sickness» y no sentia ganas de hacer absolutamente nada! Adicionalmente, ya no sentia inspiracion para hablar solamente de moda, queria escribir de como me sentia, como estaba creciendo, como ya nada de mi ropa me quedaba, pero no hacia sentido con todo lo que escribi antes. Asi que me detuve, y ahora espero empezar otra vez, con otros ojos, otra perspectiva, algo nuevo, como la nueva fase de mi vida actualmente: como mama.
El primer gran cambio en mi vida fue que mi bebe no dormia ni en el dia ni en la noche, era un pequeno relojito que se despetaba cada 2 hrs y media o cada 3 hrs para comer. Esto significaba muchas noches despierta viendo al techo, necesitaba algo que hacer para no quedarme dormida. Empece a leer mucho mas de lo que leo, pero el mejor plan fue decidir que mientras le doy de comer, escribo en el blog. Por eso llame mi blog «The Breast Feeding Chronicles». Pido disculpas por adelantado si escribo algo demasiado loco de vez en cuando, espero entiendan que probablemente son las 3 am y yo estoy aqui, con mj bebe a mitad de la noche mientras come. Mi idea no es escribir solo de «breastfeeding» sino de varias cosas que nos interesan a las mujeres, no solo a las mamas.
Y para todas uda mamas que estan dando pecho a su bebe, y estan leyendo esto con casi cero horas de sueno, solo recuerden que yo estoy aqui tambien, a punto de quedarme dormida, con los ojos a punto de cerrarse, pero al menos nos tenemos entre nosotras!
Hay varias como tu, como yo, despiertas porque estamos enamoradas.

So, this is my first post, first of many I hope. I used to have a blog where I wrote mainly about fashion , but then I got pregnant, and everything changed. I had morning sickness during my first trimester and didn’t feel like doing anything. Additionally, my blog didn’t make sense anymore, I wanted to write about how I felt, how I was growing, how my clothes were not fitting anymore, but it wasn’t related to my old posts. So I stopped, and now I want to start again, something new, like the new phase in my life right now: as a mom.
My first huge change was that my baby doesn’t sleep during the day nor the night, and when he does, he’s a little clock that wakes up every 2 1/2 – 3 hours to be feed. This means a lot of nights of wakefulness staring at the celing, and, a need to find something to do not to fall asleep. I started reading, which I continue to so, and my new plan is that while I’m feeding him, I’m gonna blog. That’s why I’m calling my blog «The Breast Feeding Chronicles». I apologize in advance if I write something too silly every now and then, hopefully you’ll understand it’s probably 3 am in the morning and I’m here, in the middle of the night, with my beautiful baby, and while he’s eating, I’m writing. I won’t write only about breastfeeding, hopefully I’ll write about a lot of things that matter to us women, not only to moms.
And for those of you that are nursing moms, you are reading the post with almost zero hours of sleep, just remember I’m here too, with my eyes about to close, but at least we have each other! There are more out there like you, and like me, only up at night because we are in love!
